scenario: mobile flock

Based on the idea of tablet whacking, mobile phones, whacked or otherwise introduced to each other, could form a very instantanous space for collaboration. As usually everyone brings along his mobile, one will find in every group, meeting or gang a collection of screens and processors.

In comparison to a fixed and official meeting room with projector and notebooks, an on-the-go situation might not need big screens for presentations but a small environment easy to set up. So, a first idea is to share a presentation, given by a “master-phone” while everyone can follow the show on his own screen. It could be even made possible to add some personal information to the slides and save it on the device.

If a larger application is required, nevertheless, two phones could form a unit, the one device being operated and keeping the menus while the other serves as display. While it’s easy to imagine even more displays, a two-handed interface using two devices for input could be interesting as well: Most mobiles can be operated with the “allmighty-SMS-thumb” of just one hand. This way an interface similiar to two-handed instruments can be set up, one hand maybe defining an input area, another more precise details. Moreover, the distace of the two devices, i.e. the two hands could be measured to serve as an extra input-parameter. Making things virtually big would result in a well known gesture.

Defining a date for a more intense meeting is another application. Gathering the schedules of each participant, then coordinating them and then publish the date is a bothersome, lengthy and yet common process. The mobile flock will just transfer all dates marked as professional or public so that a fast check is possible for everyone and changes could be seen real time.

You enter the elevator with your partners and you have set up next week’s schedule when you reach the bottom. This works the same way within other contexts, like a family gathering: Who can pick up the little boy, when can the older sister have the car, is the weekend best for visiting the grannies?

Assuming the two parents working while the kids are at school, any sudden or unforseable changes to the kid’s timetable could be transfered directly to the one “in charge” for that day (e.g. the one who took the car).

  1. Hannes:

up to now the whacking was just a possibility to let the devices shake hands and to establish the connection.

The position of the phones when they are tapped together could and should have a meaning: So the tip with the mobiles’ heads means “synchronize”, sth side by side enlarges an application from one to two phones or a T formed correography determines the “displaying” and “operating” device (just some ideas)
